Is your furry friend making a mess around his or her feeding bowl? Perhaps this song will ring a bell… “Splish, splash, I was takin’ a bath…” by Bobby Darin. If so, we can certainly relate. Even though my hubby & I adore our perfect little Yorkie, Bella, we can’t deny the incredible mess that she makes with her water bowl. Nevermind that, her H2O play park has been a determining factor in a few slip & slide accidents within our home. We desperately needed a solution! Luckily, the pet industry had already thought of one – wait for it – a Pet Placemat! Yup, that means your pup can now dine in the same fashion as you do!
If you think that your furry child deserves more than a generic, store-bought placemat/ feeding mat, then perhaps it is time to give this DIY project a try! It is incredibly easy, quick, affordable and it can also be a fun-filled family activity.
What materials do you need?
- Stencils of your choice
- Heritage & Dala Acrylic Craft Paint
- Harlequin Paints Furniture Varnish – Gloss
- Paint Brushes
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Wood/Masonite boards/mats
Where can you buy it?
Step 1: Trace the stencils onto the placemats
Here is your chance to get creative & add on to your stencil designs if you want to give drawing a go, otherwise just stick to the stencil design – no fuss approach.
Step 2: Paint the stenciled drawings on the placemats
We used the following paint colours for Bella’s DIY Placemats;
Heritage Craft Colour Pure Acrylic Paint 50ml
- 136 Baby Pink
- 48 Ripe Plum
- 135 Carmine
- 01 White
- 20 Black
Dala Metal Craft Paint 50ml
- CPM 9 Silver LO618E
Remember to use water to dilute the paint or should you make any mistakes – H2O to the rescue! The wooden placemats are very absorbent, therefore you will require a few layers of paint.
Step 3: Varnish the placemats
We used Harlequin Paints Furniture Varnish Gloss to finish off the placemats.
The Final Product
