To my dearest readers,
Mother’s Day in South Africa is just around the corner… This year it will be on Sunday the 14th of May. How about treating your mom with a nice cup of tea and of course exquisite pastries? I have included many ideas in this post, to either do a DIY high tea at home or to go out and enjoy high tea at various places in the vicinity of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
High Tea is always a winner! It is entertaining to have it at home, especially if you want to create a theme or bake something yourself. You can always place an order in advance for cake or pastries from the Lucky Bread Company in Brooklyn Mall, their coconut cake is heavenly and their apple tart is divine. Another option is ordering from the Carlton Cafe in Menlo Park, their fig tart is delicious. If you want to order cakes and pastries in Johannesburg I would suggest Belle’s Patisserie in Sandton City. Keep in mind that they also serve high tea at the patisserie. At home the decorations are up to you, thus you can be exceptionally creative!
Jam & Daisies is a brilliant idea and will make your mom feel right at ease with their soft pastel coloured walls. They have an ‘Any time high tea’ option on their menu for R140 per person, however if you are interested in making arrangements for larger groups, they have many other options and prices available. They are usually open on Saturdays from 08:30 to 16:00, however it may differ for Mother’s Day (Sunday). Normally they are closed on Sundays, but they are open for Mother’s Day, 14 May, 2017. Their contact number is +27 012 346 6692.
Illyria House is a beautiful and well maintained colonial house that has been transformed into a boutique hotel. They serve high tea while you can relax and enjoy the view of their mysterious garden. They have a gorgeous swimming pool and a spa. Their contact numbers are +27 012 344 5193, +27 012 344 4641,+27 012 343 1746.
At Kievits Kroon they serve a marvelous high tea on the terrace of the Manor House, with a breathtaking view of the Cape Dutch architecture of the Kievits Kroon Winelands Spa. It is also possible to arrange a picnic on their beautiful green lawn. The cost per person (for high tea) is R195 and their contact number is 0860 543 8487.
The luxurious Sheraton Hotel also offers a superb high tea with many delicious desserts and croissants. Their staff is incredibly friendly and you can either sit outside on the rooftop with the beautiful view of the Union Buildings or inside the lavish hotel. Their contact number is +27 012 429 9999.
In Johannesburg, the popular Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa serve morning and afternoon tea as one of their specialties in the Piano Lounge. On Saturday’s you can enjoy music by their pianist along with your cup of tea and choice of dainties. From Monday to Sunday it is R405 per person and on Saturday afternoons it is R465 (music included). Their contact number is +27 (0)11 292 6000. The Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton Square is very luxurious and serves a Lindt High Tea in the Ilitrovo Lounge and has a special that includes accommodation for Mother’s Day. It is a very convenient location if your mom is a ‘shopaholic’! Their contact number is +27 (0) 11 282 7000. Fairlawns Boutique Hotel and Spa is a beautiful and luxurious hotel in Morningside. They serve a delightful high tea from 11:00 to 17:00 in the Manor House Bistro. The “High Tea at Fairlawns” menu boasts both classic and divine high tea treats. Their classic high tea menu costs R245 per person. Their contact number is +27 011 804 2540.
At the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel they serve morning, afternoon and evening tea. Their dainty foods and variety of teas are fascinating and scrumptious. The afternoon tea has the biggest variety of treats set up on the Windsor Table. I personally love the morning tea, because it is refreshing and more exclusive to enjoy a wonderful cup of tea on their charming terrace, however it is a smaller version of the afternoon tea. Morning tea is served from 9:30 to 12pm and costs R255 per adult. Afternoon tea is served between 13:30 to 15:30 and 15:30 to 17:30 and costs R325 per adult. Afternoon tea will be charged at R495 per adult on certain holidays. Their contact number is +27 21 483 1000.
