To my amazing readers,
As promised, this is my first tip to sprinkle a little bit of joy into your life. This helped me tremendously and I hope that it can help you too. When it is one of those days that you can’t get out of the house, because you are to ill or you feel hopeless, colour can truly be MAGICAL.
I never wanted to see myself in the mirror and look ill, because it just made me feel downhearted. On those days I would braid my hair or just curl it a bit. Do my make-up, mostly emphasising on rosy cheeks and bright coloured lipstick, especially when I looked pale. When I was very weak I would do one thing at a time, for instance I would bath and then rest, then do my hair and rest again and so forth. If I was even too sickly to do that, I would wear a colourful scarf or pajamas. Someone special told me that their grandmother used to say that she quickly had to “put her face on” before she could leave the house. So, “after I put my face on”, I looked in the mirror again and I felt so much happier and distracted from my disease. I looked healthy to myself and it inspired me to believe that I will get through it.
For the good days when I could go out, even if it was only for a while, I would dress up in something colourful, even if I didn’t feel like it. In this way I cheered myself up and I looked normal to other people. I know having an invisible illness is tough and can be hurtful, but I didn’t always want to share it with strangers. I never wanted it to define me as a person, because I felt that there was so much more to me than that.
Honestly, I didn’t do it everyday, I strived to do it as often as possible. I don’t know your situation and I have no idea if this will help you, but I truly hope that what I have learned makes a difference in your life.
